Spotting the Signs of Online Toxicity

The internet can be a place of connection, learning, and fun — but it can also be a place where negativity spreads quickly. Online toxicity isn’t always obvious at first, and it’s easy to get pulled into unhealthy spaces without realising it.

Knowing the warning signs can help you protect your mental health and set healthy boundaries.

1. Constant Negativity

If a chat, group, or comment section is full of complaining, mocking, or mean-spirited posts, it can quickly start affecting your own mood and outlook.

2. Personal Attacks

Toxic spaces often allow (or even encourage) name-calling, shaming, or bullying. Even if it’s “just a joke,” repeated personal attacks create an unsafe environment.

3. Ganging Up on People

If you see groups piling on one person — whether through comments, tags, or direct messages — that’s a major red flag.

4. Encouraging Harmful Behaviour

Toxic communities may pressure people to do things that harm themselves or others, from risky “challenges” to promoting unhealthy habits.

5. No Respect for Boundaries

If people ignore requests to stop certain topics, share your private information, or keep messaging you after you’ve said no, it’s a clear sign of disrespect.

6. Drama That Never Ends

Some spaces thrive on conflict — constant arguments, gossip, or “call-out” posts. It can be exhausting and emotionally draining to stay in them.

What to Do If You Spot Toxicity

  • Leave or mute the space — you don’t need to justify it.
  • Block or unfollow people who spread negativity.
  • Report harmful behaviour to the platform.
  • Replace toxic spaces with positive ones where respect and kindness are the norm.

The Bottom Line

Online spaces should make you feel safe, supported, and respected. If they don’t, you have the power to step away and choose better ones.
