How to Start a Mental Well-being Club at School

A mental well-being club is more than just a place to talk about feelings — it can be a safe space, a source of support, and a hub for positive change in your school community. If your school doesn’t have one yet, you could be the person to start it.

Here’s how to make it happen.

1. Define Your Purpose

Decide what your club will focus on. Will it:

  • Raise awareness about mental health?
  • Run stress-relief activities?
  • Organise kindness campaigns?
  • Provide peer support?

Having a clear goal will help you get others on board.

2. Get Support from a Teacher or Staff Member

Most schools require a staff advisor for student clubs. Find a teacher, counsellor, or well-being coordinator who cares about mental health and can help you with approvals and planning.

3. Recruit Members

Start small — ask friends, classmates, or students in other year levels. Put up posters, make an announcement, or post on your school’s online noticeboard to spread the word.

4. Plan Regular Meetings

Consistency is key. Meet weekly or fortnightly and have a mix of:

  • Discussions on well-being topics
  • Fun activities (like mindfulness exercises or art projects)
  • Planning sessions for school events or campaigns

5. Organise Events and Activities

You could:

  • Host a “Kindness Week”
  • Create a gratitude wall
  • Run workshops on stress management
  • Invite guest speakers to share mental health tips

6. Make It Inclusive

Ensure your club is a safe space for everyone — no judgement, no pressure to share, and respect for privacy.

The Bottom Line

Starting a mental well-being club can have a ripple effect through your whole school. By creating a space for kindness, support, and understanding, you can help make mental health a normal — and important — part of everyday conversation.
