Welcome to The One Life, I'm Greg Harrison. I thought my next cast would be about a critical area that is crucial in the current environment. Today we're headed into a battleground in every business: cash flow. If you’ve ever lost sleep waiting for that one payment to clear, you’ll know what I’m talking about. It’s a topic close to my heart, and my tired eyes. Managing cash flow isn’t just dollars and spreadsheets. There’s the direct stress, the people, the priorities that change by the hour. And the truth is, it’s a challenge even for those with experience. Vision for the big picture is great, but in the trenches, it comes down to what gets paid, and when. I can still picture myself, up at one in the morning, waiting for the bank feeds to refresh. In the days before live banking, every night was a gamble. There was one company where the owner’s expensive hobby bled cash out. By breakfast, I knew whether I’d be begging debtors to pay up, or fielding calls from worried creditors. It was a daily ring-around,negotiating, coaxing, taking excuses, then turning around and managing suppliers in the afternoon. Payroll was always looming. That question, can we make it,felt painfully real. In the wine industry, as CFO, I had a different puzzle: 80% of the year’s sales came in a three-month burst. The rest of the year? Heavy costs, from leaf pluck to vintage. That taught me resilience, perspective, and a lot about managing energy, not just numbers. All of that shaped how I advise and support clients today. No system is perfect, but having one you trust makes all the difference, especially when you’ve got to act quickly. If you’re new to finance management, your people skills will often matter more than technical ones. You’ll encounter emotional owners, tough suppliers, staff under stress, which makes a straightforward, easy-to-follow system essential. If you want something simple to get those scenarios and cash flow moving parts clear, take a look at CashLens. It gives you the overview, real numbers, and lets you test what-ifs, all without drowning in detail. It’s not about magic fixes, just helping you see clearly and plan ahead, so stressful surprises are kept to a minimum. Cash flow isn’t a maths test, it’s a juggling act,so breathe, plan, and remember you’re not alone on the high wire. Remember to have fun!
